A little more about me

Let’s see…. Sarah and I started dating in high school. I’m pretty sure she tricked me into asking her out because I was too shy.

We went to our high school’s basketball playoff game and have been together ever since.

I went to University of Michigan-Flint after high school so I could still live at home in Lapeer because I couldn’t imagine going to school away from her (she still had another year of high school after I graduated). I took a philosophy class on logic my first semester and it just made sense to me. I remember my professor, suggesting that I take another philosophy class and telling me that people who do well in logic usually do well on the law school entrance exam. So, I got a degree in philosophy and went to law school.

Sarah and I got married in between my finishing college and going to law school. We moved into Sarah’s grandma’s farmhouse in Ohio and I started commuting to Columbus to go to law school.

Lily was born after I passed the bar exam and got my first job as a lawyer doing pro bono work while we lived with my in-laws. I got a new position in Port Huron, MI with the pro bono firm when Sarah was pregnant with Sophia. It was there that I got my first real practice at helping people with their estates.

My boss took me with her to be a witness to the signing of a woman’s will at an assisted living facility. She was so grateful and I knew what I wanted to do as a lawyer.

A couple of years later I found a lawyer who just did wills and trusts and things; the same things I knew I wanted to do. I knew by then that I wasn’t cut out to go to court and do divorces and lawsuits. I wasn’t that kind of lawyer and I’m not sure I ever could be. He graciously took me on and let me learn from him. I’ll never be able to pay him back for everything I’ve learned while working with him.

As I look back while writing this I realize just how little I am responsible for whatever success I have now and just how much has depended on the support of my wife, our families, and others. I am more blessed than I deserve.
