Becoming an adult

Today at church they honored all of the recent graduates. What a year to be a graduate.

For what’s already a time that’s emotional and difficult, I can’t imagine the stress on the students and parents that this year has been.

I was talking with a friend recently who understands that her son is now an adult—at least according to the law. (I know I didn’t qualify as a real adult when I was 18.) This means a lot of things, but one of the things that it means is that parents can’t make decisions for their child as their legal guardian, including medical decisions.

Before the new adults go off to school in the fall, if they go off to school in the fall, some simple estate planning documents like a patient advocate designation of HIPAA authorization might give parents one less thing to worry about.
